Reconciling Science and Spirituality
“The seat of knowledge is in the head, of wisdom, in the heart.”
-William Hazlitt
One of the first questions I was asked by my mother when I told her that I had become involved in a spiritual center (specifically telling her that I had started attending a Religious Science center) was, “You can still go to the doctor, right?”
It is a common misconception about Religious Science (besides being mistaken for Scientology) that we don’t utilize standard medical care. It couldn’t be further from the truth. We go to the doctor, we take medication, we engage in the benefit of all that Spirit has to offer — because it’s ALL Spirit, or God. It is actually a misstep to believe that we shouldn’t seek out medical care and indicative of a limit in mind that suggests that medical care is somehow not Spiritual. I like to say, “God is in the pill.”
The care we seek is accompanied by thoughtful and heartfelt prayer in support of healing. It also doesn’t negate the idea that we CAN heal using the power of mind only… and I trust that I am led to the right path and the right tools to accommodate that healing.
Ernest Holmes, the founder of Religious Science, was very clear:
This comes up for me as I am hearing of the various medical diagnoses of multiple people in my life. There is power in the work of medicine.
And you must know what is right for you. What sets your mind to a place where you can focus on healing? That wisdom comes from the heart, and must be felt deeply to be effective. After all, our experience of life comes in degrees. The greater degree to which we believe in perfect health, that is the degree to which we will experience perfect health. If you believe medicine will help, then it is an aid to the mind and heart. If you believe that medicine won’t help, then it may be a hinderance to healing. It is all in truly getting clear on what you know to be true in your heart.
So, here is to heart health! Here is to clarity and wisdom.
Spirituality and science go hand in hand, after all they are both the result of the same Universal Mind.
