What Is Beyond?
TODAY’S READING:
86.2-89.2
Holy smokes! Today’s reading is chock full. If you could see my Science of Mind book (the one I use for teaching of the four or five copies that I have), these pages are filled with highlights and notes in the margin. I can recall in teaching this book there have been entire class meetings during which all we discussed were these pages.
One of the questions I start with this this: What is metaphysics? The quickest definition is that it is the study of that which is beyond the physical. Holmes says this himself, “metaphysics begins where physics leaves off.”
When I read that again today I can only think of the magnificent super blue blood moon eclipse I watched in the early hours today. It was magnificent. I think of that not just because it is at the top of my mind in relation to having just experienced it, but also because at a time the phenomena could only have been described metaphysically. There was a time when human beings didn’t know what the physical aspects of an eclipse were, and so metaphysical thinking is what took the place of physics. Even today, there are elements of the interplay that we don’t understand—although we still search for the answers. Gravitation for example; we observe the physical effect of gravitation, but beyond the physical interplay what is there? Currently only scientific theory. Science leads us in the direction of understanding. Our capacity to think outside the limitations of understanding expand science into new frontiers all the time.
The gravitation that allows the experience of an eclipse (the Sun’s effect on the Earth, the Earth’s effect on the Moon, etc.) make for an amazing show for those of us who experience it. Elements of that interplay are still completely unknown. So let’s think beyond the box arrive at deeper understandings of our place among it all.
I also think today that we should celebrate our part in the Infinite. We are not at all separate from it, and the experience of the eclipse may make people feel small… I think just the opposite. The eclipse reminds me of how connected I am to all of it. I am the eclipse, and the gravity, and the solar system, and the Universe (and whatever’s beyond). I am simply expressing these things as me. I am not small, I am infinite. So is everyone.
This is a point where we’ve evolved beyond what Holmes has offered on these pages. And that is, again, the power of metaphysical thinking. Metaphysical thinking is not limited to form, so it takes us beyond form to discover new ideas we can use in our lives.
What a tremendous journey!
