The "G Word"

"I believe we are not one in God or one with God, but we are one of God."

There it is.

The "G Word."

God.

A word we both worship and fear. And, frankly, it's just a word.

The meaning we ascribe to it is ours to own. We are the ones who decide to live in a place of misunderstanding around the word and what it truly represents. That is what I see to be so prevalent in most discussions of God: misunderstanding.

Let's first consider the language issue. Language is clumsy. It is an effective tool of expression — but it is just that, a tool. So in describing God we have many words and phrases: Universal, Infinite, Loving Presence, Ultimate Creator, the Alpha and Omega, the I Am that I Am, and on... and on... and on. Yet as we try to explain the ineffable we instantaneously limit it. Any descriptor creates a box and limits that which is unlimited. It's time we unboxed God.

We have narrowly packed away our understanding of God to make it something manageable in our own mind. In packing it away, we've separated ourselves from the deepest understanding that has been taught by sages and mystics through the ages. We are not separate from this thing called God, we are one OF God.

"God" is the core answer to the question, "Who are you?"

So this is where I begin. It is my desire to unpack the word God so that we may begin to fear it less, understand it more, and celebrate its true nature.
