What Really Exists?

TODAY’S READING
66.2-68.2

I am in a doubting mood today. I think that is a healthy approach to all that I consider to be True in this philosophy—to doubt is the beginning of eliminating confirmation bias in my process. It’s very easy to look around and find proof for what we believe to be true and look away from the things that disprove it. I think my greatest asset in working through Spirituality is my capacity to doubt. Doubt makes me rethink concepts. And isn’t that what philosophers through the ages have done?

There is one line from today’s reading that I believe we should all question, and work in our lives to prove. Ernest Holmes wrote, “We are in the universe and we are conscious, so we have reason to believe that consciousness exists.”

But does it, really?

Consciousness is a state of being aware—well I am aware (I believe) so from that perspective, yes, consciousness exists.

We talk about consciousness in this study, however, as something more. We frequently talk about it as a thing in and of itself, something separate. That is where I think we get ourselves lost. Doesn’t awareness require an observation? And doesn’t observation require an observer?

I honestly don’t know that I have any answer to this. I think it is a great question for us all to ponder. If you have any ideas go ahead and leave a comment!

So we are taking that “deep dive” right now into the possibility of it all. How do we understand any of this?

At the end of the day, while I do love to ruminate on the philosophy, because it does take me deeper into self-awareness (the way I feel I fit into the world of experience), I am more interested in how it makes my experience of life better. The answer can be summed up in six words from today’s reading:

“To be spiritual is to create!”

As we involve ourselves in the creative process we are inherently being spiritual. So, in what way can we be spiritual today? Take a step into active creation today. What you create doesn’t have to please anyone else, it doesn’t have to look or feel like anything anyone else has created, it just needs to be authentic. You are a magnificent, creative being! As a creator you demonstrate this magnificence in every moment. So keep at it!
